| I) Drafting patent specifications |

| Duration – 4 Months |

Students are taught and examined on the ability to obtain relevant information about an invention and from that, given the prior art, the opportunity to draft a specification to accompany a provisional application, a standard complete application, an international application and/or a petty patent application. |

A series of tutorials are presented over the first four weeks of the course. Students are then required to submit answers to a number of drafting exercises over the next 2 months. These are assessed by tutors and written comments are given to the students. A second series of tutorials are presented over a week, later on, in the fourth month. Workshops are conducted in various technologies to assist students having differing technical backgrounds. |

At the end of the course, an assessment is done and marked by the tutors at a standard to qualify as a patent agent. Samples are set in simple and complex technical areas in Mechanical, Electronics, IT, Software, Life Sciences, Chemistry and Pharmaceuticals. The panel of tutors comprises members who previously served as Patent Analysts/Attorneys for the Top Law Firms, supplemented by additional experienced patent analysts/attorneys.

| II) Interpretation and validity of patent specifications |

| |
This course deals with the ability to express an understanding of a patent specification and what it covers for the purpose of advising on infringement, validity over given prior art, as covered under Section 40 of the Act, and other grounds of revocation and amendment. |

A series of tutorials are presented over a 2 weeks. Students are required to submit answers to a number of drafting exercises over the following weeks with fulltime on-the-job training. These are assessed by tutors and written comments are given to the students. A second series of tutorials are presented later in the second month. |

Following the course, an assessment is set and marked by the tutors at a standard. This highly practical course provides a certificate on successful completion of the course. |

The panel of tutors comprises members who previously served as Patent Attorneys/Analysts for leading law firms and Patent Services companies, supplemented by experienced patent attorneys.
